What is Zona Maco 2025?

The Zona Maco 2025 art fair was a cultural festival in the Mexican capital. Its purpose is to serve as a platform to show art to the entire continent, eliminating the borders that prevent this:

  • It is an art affair designed not only for exhibition but also for dialogue. The aim is for artists to share ideas, interact, and propose new trends.
  • Through this exhibition, art fans are inspired to learn about the different dimensions of art. Painting enthusiasts may not have explored photography or antiques. It is about forming community ties that support each form of expression.
  • The fair is divided into four sub-fairs, each dedicated to an art area. These co-occur so that attendees can enjoy any of them.

Furthermore, it has been the case for over twenty years, since the first edition in 2002. Since then, every year, the capital has dressed up to welcome the best artists of the moment with their latest works.

Where did Zona Maco 2025 take place?

An essential fact about the Zona Maco 2025 and the fair, in general, is that they are usually held in the same place. The Citibanamex Center is located at Avenida del Conscripto 311 in the Lomas de Sotelo neighborhood.

A little history of Zona Maco 2025

As we mentioned, this fair had its first edition in 2002. Since then, it has been 23 years in which we have been able to appreciate many works and memorable moments:

  • The idea of creating Zona Maco was from Zélika García, an artist who graduated from the University of Monterrey. She has taken her vision towards the connection and collaboration between artists to create a world-class event.
  • The first edition was held in Monterrey, Nuevo León. At that time, it was called Muestra 1 and was not moved to Mexico City until the following year.
  • In 2004, the cultural soirée was gaining international relevance; at that time, it was decided to change its name. From that moment on, it was called Zona Maco.
  • Over the years, exhibitions were added to the canvas collective. Such was the case of the design areas in 2011 and the salon in 2014.
  • Every year, the management of Zona Maco seeks to introduce new things from new areas and galleries to spaces for contact between artists and clients.
  • There is no denying the evolution of this happening since its first edition. Today, it brings more than 80,000 people to discover more than 200 galleries in its corridors.

Despite its short time, Zona Maco 2025 has become one of the most important fairs in Latin America. It has made thousands of people take a plane and book a hotel in the city to attend this art festival.

Let’s take a look at some of the artworks of Zona Maco 2025

You may have missed the opportunity to attend Zona Maco 2025, but that doesn’t mean you can’t see the best works. Below, we will briefly review the most striking creations from this expressions fest that impacted Mexico City.

Otherworld – Rob Woodcox

With this photograph, Rob Woodcox won the Art Prize at the fair. The composition has the setting of the Edward James Sculpture Garden in San Luis Potosí.

A group of dancers from the city adorns each space of the central sculpture. “The idea behind this work of art is to imagine a world in which our human communities live in unity with nature.”

This is how Woodcox revealed the source of inspiration behind this photograph, which earned him a prize of 100,000 dollars from the Erarta Foundation.

Twice The Silence – Mario García Torres

More than a work, it is an experience designed jointly with Mercedes Benz. It is a dark, cold, soundproof space filled with ice sculptures. These, as they could not be otherwise, are the emblem of the German brand.

Garcia Torres seeks to connect the person with silence in this way. While inside the soundproof chamber, a projection of Casper accompanies us.

Backstop 1 & Backstop 2 – Richard Serra

The case of these works is interesting since Serra’s approach is not the final result. For this artist, the process is where art truly lies, and he proves it.

Not for nothing, in his works, he usually recreates different textures through pigments and oils. These two works are subject to a striking sense of minimalism and individual interpretation.

The Greedy Hand – Mathias Goeritz

Seeking to fully understand how the fingers of the handwork, Mathias Goeritz made many preliminary drawings. Then, he could begin the composition of a sculpture that has won many admirers.

Even though it took him a long time to study the human hand, there is one small detail. The shapes do not resemble reality, which makes The Greedy Hand unique.

Rain Song – Kosei Komatsu

According to Komatsu, this work of art is inspired by a simple puddle during a rainy day. Watching the drops fall on it was the artistic origin of a work of great beauty.

The plastic pieces represent drops on a long journey to the ground to evaporate. When moving, these elements reflect the light, adding beauty to the work.
